Teruma Nakama “Mr.MERMAID” (Review)

Teruma‘s entry in the GALACTI9★SONG CD series comes as a surprise.

Tracklist:

3 - Mr.MERMAID (off vocal)
4 - パルコ (off vocal)

Track by track analysis:

1 – Mr.MERMAID

Dark, eerie synths and a deep bass line make a big impression in what is one of the most intense songs in this series. The slow tempo and dirty synths create a unique vibe, coming off as a pleasant surprise. On the vocal end it is safe to say that Someya gave a solid performance that carries a lot of intensity and is as ear catching as the whole instrumental. Unique song and completely unexpected character and group-wise. 5/5

2 – Parco

パルコ (Parco) follows the same tone. This ballad, with a sound and vibe that is commonly found in Marginal #4’s repertoire, is the only song that is common to all releases in the GALACTI9★SONG CD series. A delicate piano and strings melodies set the tone for this gentle ballad. Slow paced, bass-drum drums, melancholic guitar riffs and a noticeable bass line add the final touches to this instrumental. A nice touch – that might go unnoticed – is the rhodes piano melody play in the verses, enhancing the song’s melancholic tone. The pacing is deliberately slow, leaving the way open for vocals to shine.

Someya approaches this song in a gentle manner, delivering each verse with a simplicity that is refreshing. Interesting take on this Christmas inspired tune. 4.5/5

Final considerations

The 7th entry in Marginal #4‘s GALACTI9★SONG series is helmed by Unicorn Jr.‘s Teruma Nakama (Toshiyuki Someya).

Teruma‘s entry in the GALACTI9★SONG series comes as completely unexpected. This kind of eerie, dark and dirty sound was not what we were expecting coming from Unicorn. Jr, much less from Teruma. This pleasant surprise once again reinforced our idea of this MARGINAL#4 series being one of the most innovative and interesting since its inception in 2013.

Someya‘s performances keep on improving with both his Mr.Mermaid and Parco‘s performances being quite good sounding and, in the case of Mr.Mermaid, impressive.

This is yet another solid and unique entry in this series. Recommended.
