Ichiru Kuga “Nemuru Okarasu” (Review)

The tie up song to Issei Kuga’s “Anata no Hana” is finally here. “Nemuru Okarasu” mixes the best of both worlds, traditional Japanese elements and rock, to deliver the one of the best songs in the Kachofugetsu Hen series.

Track analysis:

1 – 眠る大鴉

Like Issei Kuga’s “Anata no Hana”, “Nemuru Okarasu” has a major focus on traditional Japanese elements, with a delicate shamisen melody being pivotal in setting the unique soothing and timeless mood for this song. Adding to this instrumental are delicate strings, a noticeable bass line and snare-y drums. All these elements suffer a couple of changes to fit the dramatic tempo changes between verses and chorus. These tempo changes bring out the best in this song as well as are a good way to showcase Ichiru Kuga’s fiery passion – a complete opposite from Issei Kuga’s calm and quietness. The verses are slow paced and incredibly relaxing, relying in the beauty of the shamisen to impress the listener. The pre-chorus introduces us to electric guitar licks and the chorus comes as a complete surprise, upping the tempo for this song in a swift yet dramatic fashion, adding raging guitar riffs, fast paced drums, straying away, even if momentarily, from the traditional vibe this song exudes. This instrumental can’t stop stimulating the listeners’ senses, presenting rich, varied melodies that create an exquisite soundscape.

Vocally, Sho Nogami was here to impress. His performance ranged from gentle in the delicate verses, to powerful and energetic in the explosive chorus, effortlessly capturing the listeners’ attention with sweet vibrato and  an impressive consistency. Safe to say that Nogami rocked this performance, one of contrasting charms and unique soundscapes. After listening to this song I can easily rank both Nogami’s performance and this song as one of the best in the whole Kachofugetsu Hen series (SQ and ALIVE).

All in all, not only is “Nemuru Okarasu” a beautiful song with a unique traditional charm, but it is at the same time an exciting tune that will make your jaw drop. Listeners are graced with a stunning performance and a mesmerizing instrumental. This is a phenomenal release. This Kachofugetsu hen series couldn’t get more interesting.
