GROWTH “Corona” (Review)

GROWTH

“Corona” is GROWTH‘s new single. Reaching the third installment of the “Alive Growth Kachofugetsu Hana Hen” series titled “Kaze”, the quartet starts to walk on some shaky ground, at least instrumentally. And while that could have ruined the song, it was actually their vocal performance that stole the show again.

Track analysis:

1 – Corona

With tender notes laid by the piano, “Corona” delivers an ethereal intro that explodes into a fast tempo mild pop track in which groovy synths are king. A complete 360 from their last release, this track showcases a brighter side of the group which comes along with a completely different vocal performance. The mix between the lower and higher tones in the chorus impressed us. Each and every single one of them delivered their vocal performance in a way that it’s impossible to criticize them. Still, we need to point out both Yamashita and Terashima for their solid, close to perfection performances at both ends of the spectrum. Although the vocal performance is all sorts of great, the same can’t be said about the instrumental piece. Yes, the intro is astounding, and the verses are actually well composed. The problem lies with the excessively overwhelming chorus that threw us off completely. Instead of throwing it at the listener, the main focus should have been the vocal performance. If you listen closely, the chorus starts off so strong that it’s hard to fully understand the first lines into it. Of course that flaw is saved once again at the end of the chorus with that stellar exchange between the high and low notes delivered by this quartet. Not perfect but still a track that shows that this group has a lot to offer vocally.

Final rating:4.5 stars

  2. Hello! I love your review about Growth songs ^^ Keep doing that. I love reading it. And I agree, they are really powerful vocally as a group. Its rare to encounter group like them. Plus, every song by them is masterpiece! I always get a goosebumps whenever I listen to their new song.

  3. While it’s great that Growth challenged a more upbeat song this time, I personally think this piece is better off as an instrumental. The instrumentals just overpowers the vocals in many ways, which is such a pity, considering the fact that the vocals are not bad at all, good even.
