GROWTH “FLOW AWAY” (Review)

GROWTH

GROWTH joined their fellow label mates SOARA with another single release, their fifth so far. “FLOW AWAY” is part of the “Kachofugetsu Hana Hen” series that both groups are doing right now.

As suggested by our readers, let’s kick off this review.

Track analysis:

1 – FLOW AWAY

With an ethereal, soothing instrumental revolving around the shamisen, vibes, a choir, acoustic guitar and taiko drums, “FLOW AWAY” is an unconventional track where Japanese traditional music takes the helm bringing acoustic elements into the mix to add those melodic final touches. While for many people this is a really unique song, its artistry really stands out and sets this group apart from the talented SOARA or even their label mates SolidS. How often do we get instrumental pieces that are fully or at least close to 90% of traditional elements only? Not as often as we’d like. In terms of vocal performance we need to point out Junta Terashima and Daiki Yamashita‘s impressive takes on the lyrics. Junta Terashima stands out easily throughout the whole song due to his distinct tone and control among the GROWTH members, but it’s especially in the chorus with his soothing low vocals as well as his steady mid-tones, that he strikes us, leaving us that feeling of having heard him somewhere and sometime before. It’s that uncany resemblance with Toshiki Masuda that really makes us want to check once again who’s really singing this song. On the other side Daiki Yamashita is the strongest high note hitter on this track, having a control over his tone that we just weren’t expecting. Yamaya and Shunichi are the ones responsible of steadily tying both poles, in the end creating a breathtaking performance – with special enphasis in the chorus – in which everyone is in total sync, having even time for some swift but beautiful ad-libs in the final chorus. Stunning track and breathtakingly beautiful instrumental.  GROWTH is certainly a talented group to be on the lookout.

Final rating: 5 stars

  1. I agree with the review here, but I personally think that Terashima Junta’s voice is different from Masuda Toshiki’s though XD
I listen to quite a lot of character songs by Masuda and yeah, they’re different.

But I think the biggest credit should be given to the composer/lyricist of this song, Takizawa Akira (also known as John Zeroness). He single-handedly make songs for SOARA, Growth, SolidS and for the Tsukiuta series October character, voice by Kondo Takashi plus another unit song for Procellarum.
What’s awesome is the fact that he can make unique, distinctive songs that are totally different from one another. Sometimes I have to check the CD booklet to confirm it is him XD He’s just that good and he has his own album too, do check him out!

Sorry for the long rant, I’m a huge fan of the Tsukipro series and I guess I’m just glad you guys started to review some of their groups 😀

    • Thank you for this info, really 🙂 We started reviewing this series thanks to our readers suggestion and having some of you giving imput about the group is really something else. But wow does Terashima Junta sing incredibly well? He’s blown me away for sure. Regarding the comparison with Toshiki Masuda, well at times they sound similar… perhaps the way the finish singing each verse or the tone at a specific part… Had to listen to the song for quite a few times until I was certain it wasn’t Masuda haha The instrumentals are always amazing whatever group we’re talking about in Tsukino pro 🙂 Thanks for your feedback!
