Track by track analysis:
1- アイム・ア・ビリーバー (I’m a believer)
Kicking off this single we have I’m a believer, a track that has a powerful intro with guitar riffs and the drums starting the instrumental. This track in the opening theme of the second season of the famous volleyball anime Haikyuu!!. Although we have the usual “sound” of the band we can certainly notice some slight, good changes. The bass is being played as if it is on “solo-mode” throughout the whole track alongside the guitar. This track definitely has the right amount of “energy”, especially in the guitar solo, that was small but meaningful, also the background vocals were a good choice in this track adding some power to it. 4.5/5
Imagination starts off slow paced, taking its time to build up towards the mild chorus, SPYAIR make good use of everyone’s skills with each and every instrument making their way towards the spotlight. The bass is highly noticeable, the guitar sounds incredibly good without being necessarily played in an aggressive way, only resorting to strong, aggressive riffs in the chorus; the drums set the pace for this highly entertaining track, a perfect choice of song to open up the first season of the anime Haikyuu!!, still there’s something missing on it making some people think that the song doesn’t have a decent build up towards the chorus, which is a little of a letdown. This track was already in a previous single, this time we have the live version of it. 4.5/5
I’m a believer was a good single, short but good, although it is a shame that we only have one new track in it. This single was a good proof that SPYAIR are changing a little bit their “sound” and that was noticeable in this new track, we don’t have the same old instrumental orientation and, also, the guitar and the rest of the instrumental sound like they are being played in a different way. After this single I think it is fair to say that we can look forward to the band’s next single.
I’m a Believer is available on CDJAPAN for all overseas fans.
