SPYAIR – Imagination (Review)

SPYAIR kicks off this year full of energy with a new single release. This new single titled “Imagination” is featured as the opening theme for the currently airing sports anime “Haikyuu!!”, making “Imagination” their 15th single in their repertoire and the band’s ninth single featured in anime, previous ones were featured in Gintama, Bleach and Samurai Flamenco, just to name a few. Now, the band from Nagoya, comes with this entertaining and energized single.

Here’s some information regarding the single:

Single: Imagination
Label: Sony Music Japan
Release date: 30/04/14
Genre: J-rock

3-イマジネーション(Imagination) (off vocal)
4-Trust your anthem (off vocal)

Track by track analysis:

1 –  イマジネーション

Imagination starts off slow paced, taking its time to build up towards the mild chorus, SPYAIR make good use of everyone’s skills with each and every instrument making their way towards the spotlight. The bass is highly noticeable, the guitar sounds incredibly good without being necessarily played in an aggressive way, only resorting to strong, aggressive riffs in the chorus; the drums set the pace for this highly entertaining track, a perfect choice of song to open up the anime Haikyuu!!, still there’s something missing on it making some people think that the song doesn’t have a decent build up towards the chorus, which is a little of a letdown . 4.5/5

2 – Trust your anthem

A complete turn of events, “Trust your anthem” sounds completely different from the previous one. Trust your anthem is a strong rock song with all the elements that イマジネーション missed. Also we have a little of voice manipulation before reaching the chorus. While the main drive in the previous track was the bass, in this one the focus is on Ike’s vocal performance, delivering the verses rapping.  The off vocal track  really points out the best the incredible good work between the guitar and the bass throughout the track, almost like if they’re battling for a place in the spotlight in this track, a thing that really enthuses the listener. The strongest track in this single by far. 5/5

Final rating: 4.5/5

The best way to describe this single is as a good, enjoyable, entertaining listen. This single manages to provide a more mid-tempo track with イマジネーション   and then a “heavier” and incredibly solid rock track with “Trust your anthem“, the highlight in this single. It’s more than obvious that this band’s sound is more than set, and SPYAIR make little to no changes to it with this release. There’s no room for experimentation in this single and that is highly noticeable if you compare this release with the previous ones. But still this single is one to join to the collection of “good singles” provided by this rising J-Rock band.

Imagination is available for purchase on CDJAPAN for all overseas fans.
