Veteran rockers Porno Graffitti release their thirty-ninth single and their third single so far this year. “Tokyo Destiny” comes as a great rock single showing that this band not only stays true to itself but also is still as relevant as they when they started off. Akihito and Haruichi show us how great rock is made with this single.

Track by track analysis:

1 – 東京デスティニー
“Tokyo Destiny” starts off with a jazzy intro with the trumpets, bass and the soulful guitar enriching the instrumental piece. Highly catchy chorus followed by an amazing piano solo and we’re still at the beginning of the song. The guitar solo is as good as we’re used to by Haruichi’s impressive skills. This variety of instruments used on this song is what makes this one of their most interesting pieces. “Tokyo Destiny” is a laidback song with a hint of jazz, a mixture that doesn’t fail to impress. 5/5
2 – ダリア
And we’re back to the usual Porno Graffitti rock. The guitar riffs and the drums guide us throughout the song leading to the chorus where Akihito’s vocals are simply on top of their game. What a variety of instruments used as usual: trumpets, synths, castanets not forgetting about the more easy to notice bass, drums and guitars. Good song with an incredibly technically speedy guitar solo. 4/5
3 – Mission of the Far East (instrumental)
This instrumental piece is a change of pace regarding the rest of the single. The clearly eastern theme is right here and you can’t deny it. As soon as you start listening to the song you notice the eastern influences mainly on the instruments since this song mixes the more traditional sound with their usual rock. It seems to work out pretty well yet it doesn’t add much to the overall single. 4/5

Final rating: 4/5

A band with an impressive repertoire and still making good music after 10 years since their formation. Porno Graffitti release this single with those 10 years on their minds and poured into this single some interesting ideas overall. What’s incredibly good about this band is that they always resort to the use of a multitude of instruments to create their songs, they don’t simply stay close to the typical rock instruments (guitars, drums and the bass), they chose to innovate, enrich their sound with trumpets, sax and castanets and that works incredibly well for them without sounding over the top. “Tokyo Destiny” is a good single to add to the vast catalogue of great singles this band has released so far. A single that makes the statement: we may be in the music industry for 10 years but we’re still relevant to it and there’s many more we have to offer.

Talking about that: the band is going to release a greatest hits next month so it’s another release that will excite this bands’ fans.

The single is available for purchase on CDJAPAN for all overseas fans.
